Role and key responsibilities
The role of the Billing and Revenue Manager is to successfully manage the Team Leaders, Billing and Revenue Co-Ordinators and Billing and Revenue Assistants within the Central Billing Team to bill right first time. The Billing and Revenue Manager will be the designated SME in relation to the client’s billing requirements.
As well as the legal teams, they will be required to work closely with the e-billing teams and the wider finance teams to provide a seamless and ‘right first time’ billing experience for our clients. They will manage their Central Billing Team and work with their senior stakeholders on billing related activity.
This involves making sure all SLA’s are met, the team are managing emails, draft bills are processed in line with client protocols, and approved bills are finalised at least twice a day. You will also link in with the International Operations teams and legal teams to support the strategic growth and development within the Business, looking at automation, reduce manual processes and resolve rejections.
As a Manager, you will be viewed as the go to person to drive the team. You will also act as a buddy/mentor to team individuals supporting them on their growth and development. You will be responsible for the direct line management of the Team Leaders in your Central Billing Team. As well as the day to day performance management and support, you will also carry out regular check-ins, mentoring, and support to drive talent development with your team members. Regular office attendance will be required in line with firmwide policy. As your team will be across sites, you may be required to travel, this can sometimes mean overnight stays.
Key responsibilities
Core Responsibilities – to deliver for the Centrally Billed Clients an efficient and effective quality driven billing process
- Lead a Centrally Managed Clients Billing Team
- Identify and provide training for your team members to ensure consistent coverage across teams/practice groups
- Identify process gaps or inefficiencies and the provision of wider training for legal teams on correct and improved matter protocols. Share knowledge and build on this to make a collaborative approach within finance and legal
- Work closely with the other Billing and Revenue Managers and teams, Client Partners and Practice/Product groups to improve growth within the firm.
- Work closely with the e-billing team
- Collaborate with the various International Operations teams including Pitch/Finance/Risk throughout the firm in order to support the end to end Client/matter life cycle.
- Hold internal and external stakeholder meetings. For Example –client partner meetings/client meetings
- Look to enhance the billing service and evolve to undertake additional billing related activity such as the on-boarding of new clients.
- Drive the team to continue delivering the firms goals and objectives.
- Review lockup for your clients and spot areas of improvement.
- Undertake any ad hoc projects related to financial housekeeping and provide appropriate support as and when required to assist Working Capital.
- Be able to track and act upon trends which are causing failures to meet quality or SLA Standards.
- Responsibility in making sure we have protocols created for each client and these are reviewed, updated and shared on a regular basis.
- Manage and maintain SLA’s, with responsibility for investigation of breaches.
- Support the firms Strategic Growth and Development, short and longer term.
- Active involvement with automation, supporting and contributing to new systems, whilst looking objectively at improving efficiencies.
- Complete half-yearly check ins, reviewing objectives and providing feedback.
- Provide practical support to the team at key times in the year or as required.
Skills and experience
We are looking for:
- You must have extensive experience and expert knowledge of billing processes within a legal environment, as well as a sound knowledge of Excel and have a sense of commercial awareness.
- A good communicator is essential, as you will be receiving client calls and dealing with members of the team. Previous knowledge of the SAP Billing System is not essential, but would be advantageous.

- Experience in the technical aspects of the legal billing process
- Team management experience
- Strong and proven stakeholder management
- Good interpersonal and communication skills as client contact, including liaising with international clients, as this will be a feature of the role. The ability to work as part of a team in a flexible manner to allow for changing priorities/workflows
- Accuracy and keen attention to detail
- The ability to work independently and proactively to discharge responsibilities
- Strong organisational skills
- Good standard of numeracy and literacy
- Client centered approach
- Willingness to take on new tasks/challenges
- Managerial experience.
