Company: Eversheds Sutherland
We are Eversheds Sutherland, a global law firm, with more than 5,000 people across over 30 countries. We’re full-service with deep niche and sector experience. Whatever challenge, wherever in the world, we’re equipped and ready to meet it. We live our values, we’re purposeful and purpose-led. So although the world is fast-moving and rapidly changing, we see it as a place where everyone can thrive. We’re ambitious for our clients, our communities – and for you. Whether you’re starting out on your career or well established, whether you’re a lawyer or in business services. If you’re looking for what’s next, we are too.
Our team
The Brussels office is part of Eversheds Sutherland’s wider Benelux offering, which also includes our teams in Luxembourg and the Netherlands. As a fast-growing and ambitious practice, the Benelux team advises clients on both domestic and international matters, working closely with colleagues across the global Eversheds Sutherland network.
Our lawyers in the Benelux are active in a range of key practice areas, including M&A, Financial Services, Banking & Finance, Tax, Corporate Notarial Services, Litigation, Real Estate & Planning, Employment & Pensions and Data, Privacy & Technology. Together, we serve clients across sectors such as industrials, TMT, energy, financial institutions, and life sciences.
Due to our continued growth, we are recruiting an Associate to join our Commercial Advisory and TMT practice in Brussels.
This is an exciting opportunity to work directly with one of our partners, Maarten Stassen. Maarten advises on commercial, regulatory, privacy, data protection, and cybersecurity matters, with a focus on European legislation with extraterritorial impact, including the GDPR, AI Act, Data Act, NIS2, and DORA. As an experienced data protection litigator, he represents both national and international clients before the Belgian Data Protection Authority and the Market Court.

Role and key responsibilities
This is an exciting opportunity to work at the intersection of commercial law and emerging European digital regulations, within a collaborative and cross-border environment. This is a broadly scoped role with a primary focus on commercial contracts and advisory matters, and a strong secondary emphasis on data protection and digital law. While a background in GDPR or tech-related law is an asset, Maarten will actively support your growth in this area. You’ll work closely not only with Maarten in Brussels but also as an integral part of a wider cross-border team with colleagues in the Netherlands, engaging in regular joint meetings and projects.
-----
Skills and experience
We are looking for:
• 3 – 5 years of experience in commercial or contract law, ideally under Belgian law.
• Some knowledge of GDPR and data law and an interest in developing expertise in this area.
• Fluency in English and either Dutch or French, ideally both.
• Strong commercial awareness and a solid understanding of business dynamics.
• Proven ability to work collaboratively across offices and jurisdictions.
• Excellent communication skills and a commitment to fostering a collegial and supportive working environment.
-----
What’s in it for you?
At Eversheds Sutherland, we offer a supportive and international environment where you can thrive:
• Work closely with a recognised leader in the field on high-profile and strategic matters.
• Benefit from regular training, mentorship, and structured career development.
• Be part of a collaborative, growing team with a clear focus on innovation and cross-border work.
• Explore secondment opportunities across our international network.
• Enjoy a culture that values diversity, teamwork, and continuous learning.

Diversity & Inclusion
At Eversheds Sutherland, “Inclusive” is a core business value. We bring together different skillsets, global mindsets and approaches. We foster diversity of thought and the freedom to put ideas into action. We have an inherent respect for the individual. We have a strong belief in collaboration and teamwork. Sharing ideas, asking questions, solving challenges and meeting our clients’ goals: together.
We want all our people to thrive at work and reach their full potential and we work hard to continue to build a diverse and inclusive culture, monitor and report on our progress and impact, and develop our approach. This is reflected in our policies, systems and processes, and in our work with diversity membership organisations.
Many of our people work flexibly in some way and we are open to considering how we can accommodate flexible working arrangements alongside role requirements. If this is important to you, please talk to us about it during the recruitment process.
We want you to perform at your best during our recruitment process. If there is any adjustment or support you need, please contact us so we can discuss how we can best assist you.
For you,
For your success.
